SCHOOLS ‘CAN COPE WITH EXPANSION’ Holly Bushnell painting the wall mural in Formby Books.

Shop mural sparks interest in local artist ART lovers have been flocking to buy a limited edition painting designed by a Formby student after seeing her wall mural in the local bookshop. Holly Bushnell, 18, added a splash of colour to the Formby Books store by designing a bright and fantasy themed wall mural for the children’s section, which has since had customers requesting more of her work. The former Formby High School student has an A Level in art and is now applying to study

Illustration at university where she hopes to learn the skills to become a children’s book illustrator and author. Holly said: “Art has always been one of my main hobbies and since painting the mural I have had a lot of interest in my work and people asking me whether I am going to do any work suitable for sale, its very flattering.” If anyone is interested in any of Holly’s paintings or would like a wall display call 01704 834 848 or 07544 820597.

SEFTON Council has assured residents that extra capacity will be created at schools in Formby to cope with any expansion of population that may arise as result of proposed new housing developments. It follows claims by FRAGOFF action group chairwoman Maria Bennett that more than 300 secondary school pupils in Formby were left without a place in their desired school this year. She says she obtained this information after contacting all secondary schools in Formby. Formby councillors, however, insist that there are currently surplus places at both primary and secondary schools. Formby Councillor, Nina Killen said: “It’s understandable that there are concerns about school places in Formby as there could be hundreds of new homes built over the next 17 years. “But I am confident that Sefton

Council has the staff in place to deal with the situation as it progresses. “As it stands, Formby schools are predicted to have a surplus of places in both primary and secondary over the next seven years, and there is capacity in some schools to increase the number of places if necessary. “Part of the local plan is about building infrastructure as well as housing and school places are an important part of that. “It is definitely something we are keeping a close eye on. “The Overview and Scrutiny Committee for Children’s Services, of which I’m a member, discusses school places about every six months and we have not seen anything so far that would alarm us. “The projections at the moment show a surplus of places which is a good thing as it gives parents choice. “However, Formby schools are very popular for good reason, because they are excellent schools which get excellent results. “Many classes in many of our schools are full, but extra capacity can be

created if the need arises. “At the moment no child has to travel outside of the town to go to school unless they choose to. That must continue. “Sefton Council has a dedicated school places team which monitors the number of children in the borough and works to provide the places that will be needed. close attention will be paid to any developments in Formby so the necessary school places will be available.” A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “We closely monitor pupil numbers, school capacity and future projections across the borough. “Any proposed developments through the Local Plan may be five, 10, or even 15 years into the future and the provision of school places would be carefully considered at the appropriate time. “The Local Plan is clear that developers will need to fund additional infrastructure where necessary and this may include provision for additional school places.”

Top female footballer gives a kick–start to primary school scheme ONE of the country’s most successful women footballers has been helping the town’s primary schools to promote the benefits of sport. The youngsters were taking part in a training day for their Bronze Ambassadors sporting qualification. The aims of Bronze Ambassadors are to increase participation in sport in their schools, promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and act as role models to other students. career. Stanley High School Games Organiser, Mike Smethurst, said: “This was a very successful visit. Meeting a top footballer like Sue has really inspired the students to strive to be the best they can.” Mr Smethurst explained that the day also included sessions on team building and producing action plans which the students will implement in their schools. Sue Smith – who scored 16 goals for England – spent much of her career with Leeds United before joining Women’s Super League side Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2011. She also has a budding media career, having appeared alongside Wayne Rooney in his Street Striker TV programme. Woman stole 300 DVDs from friend’s house to pay for her drug habit Court reporter

MAGISTRATES have given a suspended sentence to a young Formby woman whom they said had “done the dirty” on her friends and a relative. They had heard of how Jaemi Alexandra Carragher, 21, of Old Mill Lane, was given the chance to stay at a friend’s house on Watchyard Lane, Formby after her mother had kicked her out. However, when her friend’s mother, Tracy O’Connor, was at work she ransacked a cupboard and stole nearly 300 DVDs as well as seven Blue Ray discs, DVD box–sets, a Nintendo Wii console, and some games. She also stole some new school shoes from Tesco, which she returned to the store for a refund. Lynne Ingman, prosecuting at Sefton Magistrates on October 17 where Carragher pleaded guilty to theft, said that she’d told police she needed money to pay rent to her father.

Ingman said the offence put her in breach of a conditional discharge, which she had received for stealing DVDs and an XBox from her aunt’s home earlier this year. She also told the court about a conviction for theft in September, where Carragher had stolen an iPad and other items from a friend, who had invited her to a pool party. Each of the offences was a breach of trust, she said, adding afterwards that O’Connor recovered 163 of the DVDs, which had been sold to Cash Converters along with her other goods, and compensation of £360 was sought. Mark Ellis, representing Carragher, who tested positive for cocaine when arrested by police, said that as well as having difficulties with paying rent to her father the principal reason for each of the thefts was to raise money to buy drugs, and in particular cannabis: “Her motivation has been to feed her drug habit”, he said. solicitors’ offices, he said she was soon to go to a drug rehabilitation centre for six months. “She is ashamed and embarrassed and her remorse is seen as genuine”, he said. He added that she has lost friends, is shunned by people she used to know, and “her name is mud in Formby.” Sentencing her to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months, with 12 months supervision and six months drug rehabilitation, magistrates ordered her to pay £360 compensation to Tracy O’Connor as well as costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £80. To a tearful Carragher, they said: “We have to say it’s a very sad situation, people of your age being involved in breach of trust. “People have opened their homes to you and you have done the dirty on them by stealing from them. “And what compounds it is that you have intelligence, you have 11 GCSEs. “You need to get away from the spiralling problem of drug addiction.”

A HESKETH Bank community has honoured the past in an attempt to shape the future at a new development. Residents at Becconsall Gardens have unveiled a permanent tribute to a historical landmark in the town, using carefully preserved stones to create a decorative entrance to their new homes. The new development, by Rowland Homes, has been built on the former site of Lord Hesketh’s hunting lodge, which became the Becconsall Hotel, until its closure four years ago. The Bec, as it was affectionately known, fell into a state of disrepair and was

demolished but stones were kept and used to form a lasting memory of the old pub. Mayor and Mayoress of West Lancashire, Councillor Iain and Mrs Beverley Ashcroft, attended the unveiling at the development in Station Road in the village. Sue Clark, field sales manager for Rowland Homes, said: “They say the past shapes the future and at Becconsall Gardens we were delighted to create a permanent tribute to the Bec for residents to remember the hotel and lodge. “It is a mark of the strength of the community that so many people had fond memories of the hotel and wanted to honour the building. We would like to thank so many who helped us create the entrance and welcomed the new residents into village life.”

PRESSURE group FRAGOFF have announced proposals to run in the council elections next May and represent the Raven Meols and Harington wards in Formby. In a public meeting held at the Gild Hall on Monday, October 21 the action group declared their plans to represent the community of Formby in the next elections. All other parties, except Labour have stepped down from their seat to allow the group a clear run at the position. The meeting saw over 120 people turn up. Residents had a chance to hear the current

situation with the Liverpool Rd field and plans to build on the green belt land. Maria Bennett, chairwoman of FRAGOFF said: “We are not party political but believe that this issue transcends party politics, it goes way beyond politics and we believe that the best voice is that of the community as it draws all groups together. “It is not about right or left, it is about right and wrong. We are taking this back to grass roots and it could be construed as a turf war and feel the people should be represented fairly and that the councillors should vote how the people want them to vote. “We intend to change this and ensure that the community has a voice.” [emailprotected]

Housing plan on green belt should be refused say council officers Holly Rummens

A PLANNING report relating to a major housing application on the edge of Formby has been made public. A meeting with the borough’s planning committee takes place later this month to discuss plans for 274 dwellings on the site bounded by Liverpool Road, Monks Drive, Savon Hook and River Close. Planning officers are recommending to the committee that the application is refused when the meeting takes place on Monday, October 28, at 6.30pm in Southport. Now the decision rests with councillors on the committee. Jane Gowing, Sefton Council’s Head of Planning Services, said: “We have considered this application very carefully. As with all applications we need to apply planning policies

Viking historian on hand to pick Shield competition winners

when we make our recommendations to Planning Committee. “The application is recommended for refusal since we consider that there are no very special circumstances that exist to justify granting permission on this green belt site at this time. The application is therefore in conflict with national and local green belt policies.” The full report is available to view via a link on the council homepage – www.sefton. gov.uk To ensure that any additional comments are reported in full to the planning committee, any written representations on the application must be received by the Planning Department no later than midday on Thursday, October 24, 2013. Representations should be submitted to [emailprotected] or Magdalen House, 30 Trinity Road, Bootle L20 3NJ.

Resort’s Labour group respond to Local Plan SOUTHPORT Labour group’s consultation response to Sefton Council’s Local Plan has been submitted and includes their own ideas on how improvements to the town could be made. Ged Wright, explained: “It’s easy to criticise the Local Plan but we wanted to put forward a positive response that could improve our town.” Among the ideas that Labour members have agreed to be put forward and asked to be considered in the final plan are: •Creation of a Southport Design

Review Panel to ensure future developments are well designed features with input from the local community •Provisions to halt the spread of payday loans and bookies on our high streets •Inclusion of the “Burscough Curves” in the Local Plan’s list of transport priorities •Measures to ensure future developments manage their waste properly , including any potential shale gas or “fracking” operations •Inclusion of a local labour policy into the Local Plan to ensure jobs

created during the construction of developments are kept in the local area. This would include prioritising local labour for any future shale gas developments. •Prioritise and encourage development by housing co–operatives Ged continued: “Sefton’s Local Plan is going to shape the borough until 2030 so we want to make sure that the ideas we came up with can contribute to moving Southport forward.” The full response can be found at www.southportlabour.org

Students share computer skills with public STUDENTS at Range High School are sharing their IT skills by helping members of the public use the computers at Formby library. The pupils are volunteering their time and knowledge to run basic IT sessions at the Duke Street facility. The sessions are for people of all ages who are new to computers and find it difficult to navigate around a PC. Sessions involve a Range High volunteer sitting with a member of the public and helping them with various IT issues they may have. It could be they are interested in exploring the internet for the first time, or need help with opening word documents, or printing

Formby Library manager, Lisa Laisney, said: “If anyone is new to computers and struggles to know their mouse from a keyboard then these sessions are just for them. “Teenagers from Range High can pass their technology skills to other members of the community within the setting of the library. “The sessions are very informal and are a great way of one generation passing their knowledge to another. “Similar sessions took place in the library a few years ago and they proved to be very popular.” More information at 01704 874177.

FASHIONISTAS throughout Sefton will be flocking to Formby later this month for M&Co’s charity fashion show. The show is being held in aid of Cancer Research UK at The Gild Hall on Church Road on Tuesday, October 29, starting at 8pm. M&Co’s Sheila Leathley is the main organiser of the event. Store manager Emma Cook said she hopes people will help support the charity event. She said: “This is M&Co’s third fashion show in Formby. We raised more than £800 at a similar event last year. We have another really great evening lined up later this month. “Money raised on the night will be going to a great charity which does fantastic work. “I know lots of people will come along and support us and Cancer Research UK.” Amy MacDonald and Zoe Martin from Unique salon on Furness Avenue, will be doing the models’ hair this time around, and also giving demonstrations. Amy said: “We are really pleased to be doing the hair for the show this year. “It is an event that we have been to before and one that we really want to support. “Cancer Research UK is a fantastic charity that helps lots and lots of people. You never know when cancer can touch your life, so we are only too pleased to give them our support.”

Bill Esterson with fashion show organisers Code NA Zoe added: “It is a charity that is close to our hearts so we wanted to show Sheila, Emma and the team at M&Co our support. “You never know when you or one of your loved ones will be affected by cancer. “This is a great event for a really great cause.” MP Bill Esterson, who is backing the event, said he had no doubt the evening will be a success. He added: “Emma, Sheila and the team at M&Co have put a lot of time and energy into making this fashion show another ‘runway’ success. “It is great to see that other local businesses are supporting the event which is shaping up to be an excellent evening out for a very good cause. “I wish them every success.” Tickets are priced at £5 (£4 concessions) and available in store. Thumbs down to electronic voting system for council Report by

Dan Windham

THE dangers of technology were illuminated to Sefton Council after a mistake on a vote machine led to a 260 home development plan being authorised in North Yorkshire. Ryedale District Councillor, David Cussons gave a huge housing estate the go–ahead after pressing the wrong button on an electronic voting system last month. His mistake left the decision tied, allowing the chairman to use his casting vote to approve the homes being built on a Kirkbymoorside field. Sefton Council do not currently use the electronic system favouring a show of hands instead, much to the relief of councillor Marianne Welsh, Norwood. Ms Welsh said: “It’s always been a decision based on a show of hands. If you put your hand up it can clearly be seen and that’s the vital thing. “The only technology we use is a microphone when we speak and I can’t imagine the Council would ever change that.” Mr Cussons, 75, will be particularly aggrieved with the severity of his mistake as he previously complained the proposal would ‘stick out like a sore thumb’. The town’s population could soar dramatically from its current figure of under

After mishap in Ryedale, Sefton councillors will stick to a show of hands 3,000 leaving Ms Welsh relieved this technological blunder could not occur in Sefton Council. Ms Welsh said: “Technology is a good thing but there’s always a danger that it could go wrong” Although Mr Cussons apologised for the event, his error infuriated Kirkbymoorside residents as the decision can’t be overturned without making a revocation order. Whilst Ms Welsh remained adamant that human error should never be a factor on important decisions, she sympathised with the unfortunate position the elderly Councillor found himself in. Ms Welsh explained: “A lot of the Sefton Councillors are over 80 including the Mayor so this sort of mistake could really happen to anyone. “It’s very unfair and dangerous because his mistake will have a huge impact on that town. He must be devastated.”

LETTERS to the Editor It’s not fair to blame all idiotic I’m in my 80s and was conned transport behaviour on cyclists of £1,500 by scam tree fellers perhaps count the numbers of motorists behaving dangerously, such as by speeding, parking on the pavement or waiting in their cars on double yellow lines. We would be very interested in the result. Who knows, we might even learn that idiotic and inconsiderate behaviour is shown by a minority of Formby people whatever means of transport they take, and is not limited to cyclists. The tone of your articles suggest that cycling is a bad thing. In fact if a few more people could be persuaded to cycle around our compact and flat town then we may find that it helps with some of our problems like lack of parking and poor health.

Three men called on me on Tuesday, September 24 and asked me if I would like three trees cut down in my garden. I had wanted it done for ages and so I agreed – and paid £1,500 upfront. They told me that they were three generations of the same family, all tree surgeons and gave me a business card. The oldest man was in his late 60s, his ‘son’ was in his 40s and the youngest was about 17. They seemed so nice and genuine and their story was so plausible. They went outside and borrowed my neighbour’s saw and started to cut down a bush, but when I next came outside, they (and the saw) were gone. I rang the card and the business answered

but said they had not heard of these three men; they must be passing themselves off as part of that business when they are not. I do not know why I gave them the money up front, I must have been stupid. I have reported it to the police who are looking into it; they sent an officer round to talk to me that very afternoon. I am in my 80s and don’t want anyone else to have to go through this. I want to warn everyone to be on their guard and I just hope that this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Terror plots in the crossword After doing your crossword each week for a long time with my wife we noticed a change last week whereby the postions of the ‘across’ and ‘down’ clues were reversed. This was a fundamental change and we pondered it for some significance to no avail. The week October 16 crossword is a mind bender that could feature in a novel about sleeper cells being woken and terrorist plots being triggered. Not only is the reversal in again but to begin with clues 3 across, 5 down and 7 across give rise to the words ‘osama bin laden.’ In addition there are some really explosive and agressive words in the rest of the crossword viz 4 down = malice, 13 down = seismic, 14 across = wrath. Possibly our skills with clues are all wrong but noticeably ‘osama’ could easlily have been a more innocent word like ‘obama’, ‘laden’ could have been ‘ladle’ and ‘bin’ could then have been ‘bee’ to complete the pattern and totally eliminate the obvious! Now, either think deeply about this or play the music for ‘stranger than fiction’ but don’t mention my name for fear of reprisals Yours thoughtfully or neurotically, By email

Get advice on what benefits are available The new findings on payday loans released by Christians Against Poverty are deeply concerning. They highlight the desperate lengths that people are going to in order to pay their soaring bills, feed their families and keep a roof over their heads. It is particularly worrying that many of the payday loan companies do not check that individuals have sufficient income to pay them back. With 80% taking out more than one loan to repay existing borrowing, coupled with interest rates as high as 4,000 per cent, it is all too easy for

people to end up trapped in a spiral of debt that is difficult to escape. We know through our own research that many people on low incomes are just not aware of the welfare benefits or charitable funds available to them. We found that almost half (48%) of people who were unemployed and had taken out a payday loan had never checked their welfare benefits eligibility. Yet benefits and charitable funds exist to help those experiencing financial hardship – something that could happen to anyone one of us at any time due to illness, job loss, family

We strongly object to your one–sided stories in the Champion about pavement cycling in Formby village. Pavement cycling is illegal and obviously it should be condemned, but we challenge you to back up your reporting as a statement of fact that it is no longer safe to walk in the village due to pavement cycling. If it is as common as you claim you have a duty to investigate the numbers of pavement cyclists instead of simply relying on the opinion of one correspondent. Meanwhile the connection you make between Merseyrail’s cycle hire scheme and an alleged recent increase in irresponsible cycling is laughable, unless of course you are able to back it up with the number of Merseyrail bikes that can be found racing down the pavements. In the interests of balance you could also

Shelia’s story

Lynne’s story

Angela’s story

Mum of two Lynne loves being a homemaker but hates shopping “I don’t go fashion shopping I go comfort shopping!” She explained “I really struggle to find clothes that fit my body shape. I end up buying lots of black trousers and tops and only end up wearing a dress once a year. What I really want are clothes that fit and look good – basically I don’t want to look frumpy.” Lynne is wearing the Enthuse Button Cardy, £65 which adds a splash of colour to any outfit. She said “This is amazing. I feel taller, slimmer and more confident – basically I feel more like me!”

Professional hair and makeup artist Angela is always at the wrong end of the makeover process - “I spend my life advising people on how to make the most of what they have got but then don’t spend the time to do it myself. My own wardrobe is a car crash. I decided to have a clear out and threw nearly everything out…but then didn’t end up replacing enough items. So now I am stuck still wearing my maternity wardrobe and my daughter is two years old!” Angela is wearing the Summer Set Tunic, £95, which really flatters her curves. She said “I feel fantastic. It’s the sort of outfit I would wear every day!”

“My name is Sheila and I’m a chocoholic!” giggled special needs teaching assistant Sheila from Southport. “I’m a size 20 but my weight has yo-yo’d up and down over the years. I’ve lost and put on 5 stone at different times…frankly it’s been a battle. As a result buying clothes isn’t much fun and I don’t think shops have really wanted me as a customer. I’ve even ended up having to purchase clothes in supermarkets! I have three gorgeous sons and an amazing husband, but it does mean that there is quite a masculine atmosphere at home. If I even bring home pink loo paper I get funny looks from the boys! What I really want is to feel more feminine and enjoy some pampering. I am in despair at my wardrobe, the majority of which I never wear.” Shelia is pictured here wearing the Deja Vu top, £49, which is the perfect colour for her complexion. “I loved the makeover and I love this outfit. It’s smart, stylish and sexy – which is exactly what I am looking for. I know what my boys will say when they see me wearing this. Wow!”

STORE MANAGER SHARON’S TIPS Give Colour A Chance I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard a customer say ‘ooh no I never wear that colour’ but then I get her into the fitting room and trying on all kinds of colours she wouldn’t normally wear and well - the rest is history! My tip is - have a play, step out of your comfort zone and try on new colours. The right colours for you can make you look healthy and glowing - people will notice and tell you how good you look. Layer, Layer, Layer Many of us have parts of our body that we aren’t fond of - an ample derriere or a pudding tummy are complaints I come across often. The Taking Shape range is full of cleverly designed styles that help take the focus off these extra assets. My tip is, if you layer a long line body tank over trousers it skims lumps & bumps and creates a lean foundation to build an outfit from. Add a printed tunic, vest or top and a piece of chunky jewellery and you have an attractive outfit that you’ll feel confident in. Divert The Eye Straight lines across your body can be less than flattering and accentuate your middle. Mixing the lines, lengths and textures of your clothing creates interest in your outfit and distracts the eye. My tip is - try asymmetrical hems, crushed fabrics, and textures such as mesh & lace to create stunning outfits.

Putting together a wardrobe can be daunting so if you are not sure where to start we can help! Book in with us for a complimentary one-on-one style session. You can choose a session that suits your needs and time. You can even book in with a friend! Either way we’ll help you discover your individual style – come and Celebrate your Curves with Taking Shape. TAKING SHAPE STYLES The Enthuse Button Cardy, £65, will be a firm favourite in your winter wardrobe! With its softly frilled feminine collar and button trim, cosy knit feel, hook & eye front opening and swing asymmetrical hemline you can’t go wrong. The Déjà Vu Top, £49, is a pretty & feminine style that featuring 3/4 sleeves, a softly scooped neckline; layers of chiffon with edge stitching detailing & knit fabric overlapping for a flattering design. The Summer Set Tunic, £95, takes fabulous abstract print in soft rich colours and creates modern sophistication. The tunic features a drawstring under the bust with ties to create a flattering silhouette, a draped & fluid styling that lends itself perfectly to being layered, a soft shawl collar and a horizontal pleats that at hemline for a hi-lo effect.

From nuts and bolts to fully fitted kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobes, there is everything you need to kit your house up from scratch. The wallpaper and fabric showroom houses over 600 wall papers and fabric books and there are usually around 200 wallpaper designs in stock at any given time. Andy’s father David opened the store in 1980 and Andy decided to join him in the early nineties. Together they built the company up and it is now one of the few independently owned DIY shops in the area. Andy added: “We all believe passionately in good friendly service and think the customer should have the best advice possible. We also believe in doing the little things that the big stores can’t be bothered with and don’t feel you should pay extra for that.” Recently refurbished, Checkers now includes a fantastic homeware section alongside its other departments. From cups, to teapots, to aprons, crockery and every kitchen utensil you could think of, The Pottery Barn at Checkers is a jewel in Churchtown’s crown and also stocks quirky brands and pieces you may not find in the big department stores.

IT seems that the Royal train is facing the axe, following the Royal Yacht Britannia into the siding of oblivion. And ‘so what?’ many people will say. The Royal train is an anachronism that costs us all a lot of money just to cart a very small number of the very privileged few around the country not very often. Well personally I think it’s a crying shame. Just like Britannia, the Royal Train is apparently nearing the end of its life and will have, in the next year or two, to be pensioned off. But unlike even the Royal Yacht, presently tied up as an exhibit in a foreign land (Scotland), presumably the Royal train will simply be shunted into a breaker’s yard somewhere and quietly forgotten. And again, unlike the furore when Britannia’s demise was mooted, there seems to be no clamour either to save it or replace it. At the time of the Royal Yacht’s imminent demise, I remember the Government of the time making all kinds of noises about a replacement, albeit a cheaper and small one, with fanciful drawings of this floating mini Royal palace appearing in national newspapers. All to no avail of course, the bean counters got their way, but at least it was recognised that the Great British Public did have an interest in the affair. I suppose that a mere train doesn’t quite have the romantic appeal as a ship – but I liked it anyway. In my travels around the British Isles I suppose I’ve caught a glimpse of the thing, resplendent in Royal claret, on three or four occasions. Only once have I actually been very near it. I was on a train bound for Norwich from Liverpool, and we stopped at signals somewhere in the cuttings just outside Lime Street station. Lo and behold, your actual Royal Train, being shunted for whatever reason into Lime Street, came to rest on an adjoining track. Made my day, that did. Back though to its imminent demise. Apparently the old thing costs £1million or so a year to run. Well maybe it does – though I’d hazard a guess that this is the kind of accountancy figure rather like that put forward when my boss and I were made redundant from our jobs years ago now. In the list of why we were now apparently superfluous to requirements, was the fact that it cost £’x’ to heat and light our office. Presumably the place was going to be sealed and left empty after our departure. I rather think not. But in any case – is this really such a high price to pay? And why are we becoming a nation where anything in any way ceremonial or traditional should be regarded as outmoded and undesirable? Why indeed has everything splendid got to be dumbed down or done away with? The Royal train is a symbol. It is also extremely useful on occasion. And whatever a new one might cost, I wonder just how many miles of motorway could be built for the same money.

Squadron spreads wings and plans to open up new martial arts centre Report by

John Davidson chairman, High Sheriff and Alison Peake.

High Sheriff visits hospital on its birthday Report by

Holly Rummens

SPIRE Hospital and clinic, based in Formby and Liverpool celebrated its 70th birthday with a special visit from Merseyside’s High Sheriff. The High Sheriff Mr Ian Meadows OBE DL, charmed staff and patients as he was guided around the facilities. Spire began in Liverpool as Lourdes hospital in 1943 and was run by a sisterhood of nuns until 2006, when private hospital group Spire Healthcare protected the building from the threat of closure. Spire has since continued the facility’s reputation for quality of care. A new clinic was opened in Formby on Three Tuns Lane earlier this year. Highlights of the High Sheriff’s tour included a trial of the

recently installed AlterG treadmill at Spire’s Perform gym. The state of the art equipment uses innovative ‘under– weighting’ technology to aid the recovery of patients with lower limb damage. In a speech made at the event, the High Sheriff recounted his earlier visit to the hospital following an injury to his shoulder ligaments. He spoke of the fantastic care he received, and joked around with the staff that had aided with his treatment. Alison Peake, hospital director at Spire Liverpool, said: “We were honoured that the High Sheriff dropped by to mark this very special milestone. “Mr Meadows was a delight, and it was our pleasure to guide him around Spire and show him how the hospital has evolved over the years to become a state–of–the–art facility.”

Internet hit for tourism website ...it’s one of the most visited addresses in the country, figures show Report by

Ollie Cowan

MORE and more visitors are logging on to the visitsouthport tourism website making it one of the most popular in the country. Figures released by New Mind, which hosts www.visitsouthport.com, show that during September, the Southport site was in the top 5 of unique visitor numbers for tourist destination sites across the UK. New Mind hosts about 60% of the UK’s official destination websites and the Southport site is regularly in the top 20 most visited destination web sites out of more than 150 in their growing portfolio. During the Saturday of the popular Southport Air Show, the visitsouthport site managed to attract more than 25,000 visitors alone. This was the highest number of hits ever received by New Mind in a single day beating the previous record by more than 8,000. Councillor Ian Maher, Cabinet Member Regeneration and Tourism, has welcomed the latest figures. He said: “These statistics clearly show the visitsouthport website is now one of the most visited tourism sites in the UK. “The Southport site was up against some

other major cities and other tourist destinations so to have the most unique visitors in one day of all the New Mind sites speaks volumes. “This reaffirms what we have known for so long that Southport and Sefton are great places to visit and offer something for the whole family.” The visitsouthport website has recently been updated and re–launched promoting tourism in Southport and Sefton. The new responsive site recognises whether you are viewing it from a mobile, tablet or laptop and formats the display accordingly. • For more information about the site log on to www.visitsouthport.com.

SOUTHPORT and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust’s Wheelchair Service is celebrating 10 years of supporting patients across West Lancashire, North Sefton, South Ribble and Chorley. The Wheelchair Service, based in Skelmersdale, has around 6,000 patients and marked its anniversary by hosting an open day for patients past and present. The day was a chance for patients to glimpse behind the scenes, including the stores and workshop. There was an opportunity to meet not just the therapists, but administration staff and those involved in the maintenance of their wheelchairs, some of whom they may never otherwise meet. The service was set up to provide seamless care and support for all full–time wheelchair users across West Lancashire, Chorley and South Ribble and has been so successful it was recently extended to cover patients in North Sefton.

Users of the Wheelchair Service alongside staff from Southport and Ormskirk Trust Code NA Yvonne Baron, Wheelchair Service Manager, set up the service in 2003. She said: “It’s great to see the service going from strength to strength. “We work hard to ensure we provide the best service possible for our patients, whilst striving to be cost–efficient. We re–use and recycle everything, nothing is thrown away!” Attendees also included Peter Cousins, chief executive at Brighter Future Workshop, a charity

that provides new and recycled mobility at a cost–effective price. The Wheelchair Service donates unwanted equipment to Brighter Future Workshop to enable it to be recycled and re–used. Peter, a wheelchair user himself, who was involved in setting up the original service, said: “I’m delighted to see how the Wheelchair Service has developed over the last 10 years.”

Dean Jones

WE all love a good mystery. So when the remains of a long forgotten shipwreck appeared on Ainsdale beach it left locals desperate to trace the ships origins. So far it’s left people clueless, until now. Southport resident Mr J. Allen Miller, compiler of The Great Lifeboat Disaster of 1886, reckons he has cracked the mystery. He contacted The Champion to say: “In 1883 there was a terrific gale raging off the coast of Southport. “In the early hours of January 28 a Norwegian barque, the Atlantic, was driven ashore opposite Ainsdale. “She was struck heavily and was severely buffeted by the immense sea. “The panic–stricken crew attempted to lower a lifeboat but this was immediately smashed against the side of the vessel. “Fortunately for the shipwrecked crew the tide was ebbing and when the vessel was left dry some men from Ainsdale went alongside with a cart and took the eleven–man crew and their kits to Mr John Melling’s Railway Hotel in Ainsdale. “Later the vessel became a total wreck. “I believe that the remains shown in your paper are out of the Atlantic. “The barque was outward bound from Liverpool to North America laden with salt and had been out of port for a week or so in the fearful weather. “The gale had extinguished the light by which the Captain had attempted to attract the attention of the Eliza Fernley lifeboat crew. “Just after daylight the vessel was sighted from the shore and as soon as the horses could be found the lifeboat was taken out and drawn along the shore towards Ainsdale. On being informed that the vessel’s crew had been taken ashore, Captain Hodge and his crew returned the lifeboat to its station.”

He also mentions how there is a photograph, taken in October 1988, showing the chief lifeguard, Verdi Godwin, standing over the remains of the Atlantic, which had been uncovered by the tides of that month. A report stated that the Atlantic’s remains are now in the Shore Patrol Offices at Pleasureland, having been washed down after being winched away from the shore by a DUKW. He goes on to say: “The Botanic Gardens Museum also expressed interest in the wreck and were hoping to consult experts with a view to preserving some of it in the Museum. “What has happened since then I have no knowledge. “However, I hope that the above information will have identified the wreck and encourage further research.”

Winston Churchill has a very interesting visit to Southport meeting at Southport’s Empire Theatre – to be attended by no other than Winston Churchill. Blessed with this knowledge Dora decided the best thing she could do, seeing as Churchill was already in favour of the suffragette movement and didn’t need influencing further, was leave well alone and let the meeting run its course. But she decided to sneak into the Empire Theatre, climb a ladder and lock herself in the theatre’s loft the day before so she could stage her protest aided by her brothers (sorry – sisters!) in arms, Miss Etherley and Miss Tolson. The trio spent a very cold night shivering and covered in dust for their cause and the opportunity eventually came as Churchill took to the stage to address the crowd. As The Examiner reported back in 1910: “Several thousand people were listening quietly to Churchill, who was talking about people’s representations in parliament, when a voice from the rafters cried ‘these do not represent the women!’ Nobody could find where the voice had come from for a few minutes, until Winston clocked onto the fact

he was being heckled from a higher power. The trio watched as people tried to work out a way to get them down. The audience cried: ‘chuck her down’ and their wish was almost granted as a steward, who managed to make his way to the loft, began to scuffle with Dora and risked them both falling to the floor below. At this point you have to feel a little sympathy for the Liberal ‘media officer’ who had reassured Churchill before he arrived that the audience had been hand picked and said: ”I personally guarantee everyone on the audience will be well behaved.“ Churchill was left looking on in despair, no doubt thinking to himself that he’d never face a greater difficulty in his lifetime than removing three women from the loft of a Southport Theatre...

In 1909 the Suffragette movement was well underway and women across the country were campaigning to be allowed to vote. A fair and eventually victorious request of course! But as history tells us, like modern women, they definitely made their voices heard! Plenty of protests made national headlines with one, dubbed at the time the suffragette’s most successful coup’, taking place right here in Southport. The two most famous suffragettes are arguably Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the movement, and Emily Davison, who threw herself under King George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby in 1913. Although their names are etched in history, there are three women who took protesting to a whole new height – about fifty feet to be exact. Dora Marsden, a Manchester suffragette, was sitting in her front room one afternoon when she got wind of an impending Liberal

FIRSTLY I must thank you all for your kind comments about last week’s column and an added thanks to the readers who discovered our hidden treasure! Secondly, I must apologise for leading some of you astray, as this week’s column won’t be featuring the macabre history of a Chapel Street department store. That particular topic will feature soon but whilst researching for my column I stumbled across a far more interesting topic I’d like to talk about. It concerns Winston Churchill, a rather angry woman and the Suffragettes...

When you join the hundreds of thousands of people who take part in wear it pink, you become part of a collective force of scientists, supporters and people affected by breast cancer. Together, our mission is to beat this disease by funding groundbreaking research. Our approach to breast cancer research is pioneering and highly responsive. Breast Cancer Campaign looks for opportunities where the potential for real impact is the highest. Then we get the necessary funding straight to where it can make the most difference. But despite recent advances, breast cancer is still the most common cancer. Every year it claims the lives of 12,000 women, and 50,000 more are diagnosed. It’s crucial that we keep funding this vital research. Last year, £2.1 million was raised by our wear it pink supporters and this money is already funding world-class research across the UK and Ireland that saves lives.

September 6, 2014 (previews from July 30) at London’s Leicester Square Theatre, Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles comes from Bill Elms & Jen Heyes Productions Ltd and is written by Andrew Sherlock. Bill Elms, co–producer of Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles added: “We are absolutely delighted to be taking Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles to London and to a wider audience. “After the amazing feedback we received from audiences in Liverpool – including those who knew Brian – we felt that the next natural step was a West End run and we hope London loves the show as much as Liverpool.”

FORMER Southport resident and Coronation Street star Andrew Lancel is to reprise the role of Brian Epstein when Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles opens in London’s West End next year. The play premiered in Liverpool last year to great acclaim and is to be shown at the Leicester Square Theatre in Summer 2014 for an initial six–week run. This role is Lancel’s first part since he was cleared of indecent assault charges. A jury at Liverpool Crown Court took less than half an hour to throw out the case in June. Lancel, who was born in Rufford and educated at Tarleton High School, became famous by playing parts in Cardiac Arrest with Helen Baxendale, The Bill and Coronation Street. Epstein: The Man Who Made The Beatles is a window into the private world of the music entrepreneur whose stellar career as Beatles manager made him a household name yet whose controversial personal life remained very much in the closet. Brian died in 1967 of an accidental overdose at the age of 32. Will Finlason will return as the fictional character ‘This Boy’. Andrew Lancel said: “As a huge Beatles fan I am absolutely delighted to be returning to London and this role, wonderfully written by Andrew Sherlock. Especially in the year that would have seen Brian Epstein celebrate his 80th Birthday.” Running from August 5 –

and tea or coffee, and a sandwich lunch will be available for £5. There will be no charge for anyone who comes to listen to the performance of both works at the end of the day. To find out more, call 01704 553903.

THERE’S still time to enjoy some family free events at Liverpool’s Albert Dock this autumn half term week. The Big Draw event, aimed at encouraging children to draw, will be celebrated at the Dock’s three principle attractions – Merseyside Maritime Museum, the Beatles Story and Tate Liverpool. The latter is holding The Big Draw: Cartoon Constellations all week, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm every day to give young ones the chance to create their own mythical creatures to populate Tate’s specially–created ‘Map of The Heavens’, with renowned artist, Jim Medway. At the Beatles Story kids can put pencil to paper and contribute to the ‘Lennon Line’ – a very long roll of paper which visitors are encouraged to scrawl their finest Beatles–themed drawings on, with the aim to produce a single piece of artwork displaying the scribbles of hundreds of people. Merseyside Maritime Museum will also be holding Big Draw events today (October 23). The Albert Dock was famously the original home of ITV’s This Morning programme which recently revisited the dock for a one off 25 year anniversary special. Albert Dock is offering one lucky family of four a fantastic prize, including an overnight

STUDENTS and staff at Stanley High School in Marshside have been baking off and brewing up to support a leading cancer charity. They produced a wide range of tempting cakes and pastries as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, the national event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. These were then sold off to raise funds for the charity which works to improve the lives of people affected by cancer by providing practical, medical and financial support, and pushing for better cancer care. When all the money was collected in from the long queue of people keen to buy the tasty treats, over £700 had been raised for the charity – more than double the figure raised by the school last year. Stanley High dedicated this event to the staff and students, and their families and friends, who have been affected by cancer in their lives. Many members of the

Cheers from some of the students who took part in the Stanley High fundraising event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support school community have lost family members to the disease, or know people who are currently suffering from the illness. As part of the coffee morning, they were encouraged to place their messages of support on a memory board. Headteacher Ed Fitzpatrick commented: “Students here at Stanley High are always enthusiastic supporters of charity projects and this was certainly the case again with this event in aid of a

particularly worthwhile cause. “The cakes they produced looked absolutely delicious, so it’s no surprise to me that they achieved their target of raising more than twice the amount of money they collected 12 months ago.” Macmillan chiefs hope that when all the money is in this year’s national event will have been an even bigger success than in 2012 when 115,000 people were involved, raising a record £15 million.

Neighbourhood police shake–up across Sefton will see areas merged Report by

Tom Martin

A NEIGHBOURHOOD policing re–structure will take place across Sefton that will see seven key areas reduced to only four. The changes will come into effect on Monday, November, 11, and result in the creation of larger neighbourhoods with some towns being merged. However, it has been confirmed that there will be no reductions in the amount of community support officers and constables. Sefton Area Commander, Chief

Re–structure will not result in loss of officers, promise police chiefs Superintendent Nikki Holland, said: “In all the changes we have made we have focused on what the public tell us is important; maintaining a visible policing presence, answering your calls and attending, both emergency and non–emergency calls, within our agreed target time. “I want to reassure people that all of our wards will continue to have dedicated resources in place, with no planned reduction in officer numbers. “Four new neighbourhoods will be created by merging a number of existing neighbourhoods, each serviced by a fully operational police station. “They are North Sefton, South Sefton, East Sefton and West Sefton.

“Additionally the two general enquiry offices at Marsh Lane and Southport will not be affected. These changes will ensure we maintain a highly visible police presence across Sefton and remain accessible to people who need us.” Merseyside Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy said: “I am very pleased that Merseyside has kept the kind of neighbourhood policing that the public want to see. “When I set out my Police and Crime Plan, which the Chief Constable Jon Murphy is responsible for delivering, one of my priorities was to provide a visible and accessible neighbourhood policing style. “The public want to see dedicated teams focused on the needs of their areas. Merseyside Police will continue to deploy PCSOs, even though other forces have been forced to cut them. “Both the Chief Constable and I are absolutely committed to maintaining neighbourhood policing.”

Chris Richardson, community engagement manager at Adactus, said: “We’ve been able to support some great bids for the first round of this years £35,000 Neighbourhood Fund and can’t wait to see what ideas local residents come up with for the remaining £15,000.” Adactus regional manager Mike Murphy added: “Cash for small to medium scale community projects is hard to come by at the moment but our Neighbourhood Fund offers local people a ray of light. Applying for the fund is simple and our staff

his masterful portrayel sparked a desire to try his hand at the musical again but, this time, on a grandiose scale. “I was already accustomed to the show so I went into the first audition quite confident and decided to perform recall material to be a bit different,” Nick explained. “I was so excited and relieved to get the part and I’m just hoping I can bring something new to it. It’s already a famous show so people have pre–existing perceptions of what to expect.” After growing up performing in shows around Southport, Nick made the decisive move to London in 2010 to study Musical Theatre at the prestigious Guildford School of Acting. Nick flourished under the training of industry experts, leading him to land the role of Hazel in the musical Pipe Dream, at the Union Theatre, London. Despite the demanding performance length of Pipe Dream and the gruelling rehearsal schedule for Avenue Q, Nick explained he relishes the exciting nature of the job. The actor said: “Rehearsals are 9–5 for three weeks so we rattle out the hours quite quickly but I love the intensity of going in every day and getting on with it.” “It’ll all be worth it when my Mum and Nan come down to watch the show. They’ve supported me through everything and were so happy to hear I got the part.” Avenue Q will run from 29 October to 2 November and customers can buy tickets from www.theatreroyalwindsor.co.uk or ring the Box Office on 01753 853888

A FORMER Southport resident and aspiring actor is on the fast track to stardom after landing a leading role in the Theatre Royal Windsor’s production of Avenue Q. Nick Martland, 22, will appear in the much loved American musical later this month, playing the part of an unemployed, aspiring comedian named Brian. The show marks the culmination of a remarkable journey for Nick, swapping performances at Southport College and the Little Theatre for dazzling 700 people in the capital. The former Stanley High School student said: “Appearing in front of such a large audience will be very different but, for me, it’s just all so exciting. “It’s what I’ve always wanted and it seems like all the pieces of the puzzle are finally coming together.” Nick will already be well accustomed to the musical before rehearsals begin on October 7, having previously starred in same show during his time at Southport College. THE opportunity to enjoy a bit of free respite is something that most people won’t turn down, however according to Jason Carroll, manager of Southport’s Byng House many current and ex serviceman are in danger of doing just that. The hotel will host an open evening Friday, November 1 from 5pm to 9pm and a fundraising day on Saturday, November 2 from 12pm until 5pm. It’s all to promote their poppy breaks, which allow current and ex serviceman to enjoy free holidays for them and their families.

While many guests are veterans of past wars, like World War 2, Jason is keen to stress that people who have served in recent conflicts are more than welcome. “What we’ve tried to do is open our doors because we want to be used by a wider audience,” said Jason. “Year on year we get more people who want to be involved, hopefully it should get the message out about Byng House.” One person who the poppy breaks have helped is former serviceman Paul Davies. Paul was involved in a

horrific motorcycle crash in May 2002, leaving him bedridden for three years. “I had to re–learn everything,” said Paul. Stuck in his army routine of early morning starts and constant cleaning it was Byng House that gave him a much needed break. “The accident made me a loner, but I’ve felt like a king with all these trips,” he said. To find out more about the poppy breaks plus more information of the help available to current and former serviceman contact the Royal British Legion on 08457 725 725.

Dan sets sights on Brazil 2016 Report by

Tom Martin

SEFTON gymnast Dan Purvis has told The Champion that his fitness problems are finally behind him and he now has his sights set on the Rio 2016 Olympics. The 22 year–old, recently finished in the top seven at the World Gymnastics final in Antwerp, but this year has not all been easy and he admits that after the London Games in 2012 his performances were affected by fatigue and fitness troubles. Now Dan is back to his best and has played down any concerns that he is still suffering from post–Olympic tiredness. He said: “I’m back training and I will be working on some new stuff. The high bar is my weakest piece and I’ll also be working on some new releases. “After the Olympics I had a month off which was unusual because gymnasts never have time off. “It was difficult to come back after that and I was tired at the start of the year “I think that was reflected in the my performances because things like travelling took it’s toll”. As reported in The Champion recently, his coach, Jeff Brooks, claimed that some gymnasts might have opted to pack it in after such a hectic year – but this was never going to be the case for Dan. Dan added: “There was a celebrity status for athletes and it helped because the media started covering events like the World Championships and not just the Olympics. “It was hard to try and get into it but retirement was never a consideration.

Daniel Purvis in training with coach Jeff Brooks at Ainsdale YMCA gym “I’m going to try to get to Rio and that’s definitely my plan. Dan recently carried the Queen’s baton at Buckingham Palace ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games next year. It was all part of a busy period for the Crosby gymnast, as he had just arrived back from the competition in Antwerp. He narrowly missed out on a medal in the floor section when he ended up in fourth place. “It was great to be back and competing with the best in the world. “It was a strong tournament and I was frustrated at first because a few silly mistakes cost me on the floor but looking back on it now I can say that I am pleased with fourth.” Jeff Brooks, his coach from Southport YMCA Gym Club, said: “It sounds like a cliché but Dan will take one year at a time. “The recent results are very good and the club are so proud of him”.

Halfway to Paradise – The Billy Fury Story ultimately claim him. Fury’s Tornados came into Billy’s life in 1970. Guitarist Chris Raynor said: “He was 6ft tall, handsome and a big star with a terrific voice but he was also very shy and quite a nervous performer. This had a devastating effect on the females. They all fancied him. “After each performance it was quite usual for the band to be keeping the dressing room door on its hinges.” Fury’s Tornados continued to back Billy until his retirement through ill health in 1976. In 1982 a new recording contract with Polydor Records bought Billy out of retirement. Tragically on January 28 1983 Billy lost his final battle with heart illness. Fury’s Tornados are........ OVER 30 years after the death of rock legend Billy Fury, his band – Fury’s Tornados – are to storm back into Southport. They will be at the Southport Theatre on Saturday, November 2 at 7.30pm for the show Halfway to Paradise – The Billy Fury Story. Fury’s Tornados remain Billy’s longest ever serving band and continue to tour with all original members. Now in its 17th year and featuring the voice of Colin Gold as Fury, they remember their old friend and boss by performing live those 29 hits, including: I Will, Last Night Was Made For Love, Wondrous Place, Jealousy, and Halfway To Paradise. Billy Fury died on January 28, 1983 aged just 42 – the same age as Elvis. He had suffered ill health throughout his life. Born in the Dingle district of Liverpool, a shy young 19–year–old Ronnie Wycherley went to the Birkenhead Essoldo in the hope of interesting the shows star, Marty Wilde, with some of his compositions. Thirty minutes later rock impresario Larry Parnes had pushed him out onto the stage and re–christened him – Billy Fury. Billy was taken to London where he secured a record contract with Decca records and in February 1959 entered the UK top 20 with his own compositions Maybe Tomorrow, Gonna Type A Letter. It is the first of an unbelievable 29 hit records and he went on to sell more records for them than any other artist, including the Rolling Stones. He scored more hit singles in the 60’s than the Beatles! This would all have been a fairy tale had it not been for an illness that was to follow him throughout his life – and

Live like a countess on Regency Park Looking for a beautiful waterside property in Bootle? Why not try Keepmoat’s brand new Coffee House Bridge development, next to the iconic Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Househunters looking for their dream home in Bootle are in luck as Keepmoat’s stunning Countess view home is now available to buy. This four bedroom, link-detached home with a garage, on the popular Regency Park development offers buyers a unique opportunity to move straight into their ideal home, as the property comes with carpets, blinds, integrated appliances and light fittings included.

Be prepared to act fast! Before the sales office had even opened, Keepmoat had sold five of the 26 properties at the phenomenally popular new development, with a further two homes sold last weekend at an event to mark the sales centre opening.

This fabulous property on plot 154 is on the market for £129,995, and with the government’s latest finance scheme, Help to Buy, it could be yours for just £103,995.

Keepmoat has a number of house styles and sizes available on both developments, so why not visit the show home to find out more? Regency Park is open seven days a week, and one of Keepmoat’s knowledgeable Home Sales Executives will be on hand to talk you through the process of buying a home, as well as telling you all you need to know about the Help to Buy scheme.

Spread over three floors, this spacious home features a kitchen/diner, a stunning downstairs living room and a convenient downstairs cloakroom on the ground floor. Over the next two floors you will discover four bedrooms and two family bathrooms.

The government’s Help to Buy scheme offers buyers who have saved a 5% deposit the chance to take advantage of a five-year interest-free loan covering 20% of the value of the property. The remaining 75% of the property’s value will be funded through a mortgage, which Keepmoat can help buyers to arrange.

Looking for something smaller? Keepmoat has a number of two bedroom Marquess properties available at Regency Park. These homes are perfect for professional couples looking to get their feet on the housing ladder and are on the market for just £89,995, or only £71,995 with Help to Buy.

Why not pay us a visit to find out more? Our sales offices are open 7 days a week. Regency Park: Balliol Road, Bootle L20 7EA. Sales office open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, Monday 10am to 6pm. Call 0151 922 3197. Coffee House Bridge: Merton Road, Bootle, Sefton, Liverpool L20 7HQ. Sales office open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, Monday 10am to 6pm. Call 0151 909 5843.
